WWDC push due to 'huge' iOS 5: widgets, new notifications

updated 03:10 pm EDT, Fri May 27, 2011

WWDC media drive explained as iOS 5 overhaul

Apple's big media push for WWDC may be due to the sheer scope of the changes in iOS, a possible scoop uncovered. The OS would nave a "completely revamped" notification system, addressing one of the longstanding complaints of the OS since it arrived. Widgets would also finally join the platform for the first time, TechCrunch said, and give users quick-glance information much like their Android and Symbian peers.

While the rumor is unconfirmed, the notifications were at least hinted through Apple's past hiring plans. Last June, Apple hired the webOS notification designer away from HP's Palm division. WebOS has often been touted as having one of the better notification systems on mobile devices since it's both unintrusive and more elegantly stacks multiple notices.

Although not mentioned in the most recent rumor, one of the largest features may be over-the-air updates that would finally make iOS independent of a computer for all but backup and local media syncing.

Talk of Apple using Nuance voice commands in iOS was already supported recently by code mentions in Lion. Most also presume that Apple's cloud music service may play an integral role in the new mobile software.

One of the multiple sources suggested that Apple might have some new iPhone or iPhone-related hardware at WWDC, but it's increasingly suspected that Apple will focus exclusively on software at the keynote for the San Francisco developer meet. The next flagship iPhone wouldn't be shipping until September and may be waiting on the official release of iOS 5.

Thecominationis1234, that's a funny statement about a market segment where the majority of the current players (i.e. the "other devices") primarily owe their existence to iOS/iPhone to begin with.

    Years Behind

So Apple is blatantly copying Google but oh no let's not say anything like that! Only Microsoft and Google copy from Apple, because Apple is the first to do everything, because Apple does everything right!

iOS 5 might have a few things stolen from Android but the funny thing is it's still behind and they've had a year to catch up. Even Windows Phone is about to surpass the iOS.
