Quick summary of flight info shows up in results

Google has enhanced its search results for travelers. Users searching for flight information now can see a summary of flights to and from a specified origin-destination pair. A single click can then expand the view to show the complete timetable.

Clicking on a specific city in the search summary produces a view of all flights to or from that airport. Flight information is available in ten languages including English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Dutch, Brazilian Portuguese, Polish, Russian, Turkish, and Catalan.

Google acquired the technology for this search refinement through its acquisition of ITA, which the company purchased last July for $700 million.

The US Justice Department did take a close look at the deal from an antitrust perspective. DOJ did approve it in April, but with conditions. These included requiring that Google license its current and future travel software to other travel websites. Google must also continue to fund R&D of the software at similar investment levels to ITA's before the takeover. Also, Google cannot make deals with airlines that would inappropriately restrict the airlines' right to share seat and booking class information with Google's competitors.
