updated 02:45 pm EDT, Thu May 26, 2011

Office, Photoshop feature as prominent titles

In a sudden move, Amazon has opened up a storefront for Mac software downloads. Some prominent titles include the Home and Student and Home and Business editions of Office for Mac 2011, which are $115 and $216, respectively. Some other highlighted titles include Photoshop Elements 9, Final Draft and Toast 10 Pro.

As a special launch promotion Amazon is adding a $5 discount with the coupon code "SAVE5MAC." The deal is only available until June 1st however, and only for one download per person.

While the software industry is switching to digital downloads as a rule, the new storefront is also representative of Amazon's attempts to mimic Apple. Apple, for instance, distributes Mac software through the Mac App Store. Amazon likewise sells digital music and videos, and launched its own app store for Android devices. The most obvious competitive moves may have been the launch of Cloud Player and Cloud Drive, which beat Apple to the punch in terms of cloud music services. Amazon is moreover rumored to be developing Android tablets.

    Except....

While the software industry is switching to digital downloads as a rule, the new storefront is also representative of Amazon's attempts to mimic Apple.

Except Amazon has been selling digital downloads for a while now.

Apple, for instance, distributes Mac software through the Mac App Store. Amazon likewise sells digital music and videos, and launched its own app store for Android devices.

And people were selling music and video downloads before Apple. Does that mean Apple was just attempting to mimic those other online offerings?

The most obvious competitive moves may have been the launch of Cloud Player and Cloud Drive, which beat Apple to the punch in terms of cloud music services.

So now Amazon is 'mimicing' Apple by launching a service Apple doesn't even have? Wow, what's next. Are we going to be saying how Amazon also mimics apple by selling digital books? Sure, Amazon did it first, but Apple was bound to start doing it so they just beat them to the punch!

And Amazon has had their cloud services online for several years, offering space for both people and for resell to other developers to offer cloud services. But their music service is still just a derivative of Apple, rather than Apple trying to catch up to Amazon?
