Nokia intros Oro as its first luxury smartphone

updated 10:50 am EDT, Wed May 25, 2011

Nokia Oro brings Symbian Anna, real gold trim

After a long silence, Nokia put itself back in the luxury phone field Wendesday by launching the Nokia Oro. Its device is the first luxury smartphone the company has ever made under its own name and is itself an upgrade of the C7 it's based on. The new version comes in an 18-carat gold trim, sapphire crystal in the home key, and Caledonian leather, but also uses Symbian Anna to give it much faster browsing.

Given its roots, the phone still has a 3.5-inch, 360x640 AMOLED screen and an eight-megapixel f2.8-4.3 camera with 720p video recording. It likewise shares the pentaband HSPA 3G support and should work on North American carriers like AT&T and Rogers as well as it does elsewhere. Nokia bundles the phone with a matching headset.

The phone comes in two trims that include either black on both sides or a white version with tan leather on the back. Nokia is very aware of the luxury audience being courted by the Oro and is shipping it first to Europe, the Middle East, and China, where some consider luxury vital. Pricing is relatively affordable at 800 euros ($1,126) before the relatively improbable carrier discounts.

A US release hasn't been mentioned, though again it should work properly in the country if shipped over.

Not all Nokias are luxury phones???

I though all nokia phones were luxury phones because they cost a lot and are useless lol
Kidding, in fact, before the iPhone, Nokia was my favorite brand. I liked a lot the Nokia PC suite (and a plug in for Macs) because you could do everything from that program, even chat using the infrared port and SMS messages.
The latest Nokia phones I have see have a terrible sound, but very good reception. To bad they stalled in the past.
