FileMaker offers 50 percent off Bento/FileMaker Pro upgrade

updated 02:50 pm EDT, Tue May 24, 2011

Deal expires with WWDC

Apple's FileMaker division is offering a temporary discount on upgrades to FileMaker Pro 11. Under the terms of the deal, owners of the company's Bento personal database software can upgrade to Pro 11 for $149, or 50 percent off the software's normal price. Pro differs with more control over aspects like appearance, automation and connectivity.

The deal expires on June 7th. The timing of the deadline may be deliberate, as it occurs on the second day of WWDC, Apple's annual developer event. The company could conceivably announce Pro 12 around the same time, offering free updates for recent buyers of Pro 11.

    Upgrade to FM 12?

I'm not sure this discounted version will allow free upgrades to FM 12. Some of the sale conditions include:

    * This promotion is not valid for software upgrades, updates, volume licenses, education/non-profit and/or site licenses....
    * FileMaker reserves the right to modify or withdraw this promotion at any time.
    * This promotion is not transferable or applicable toward future purchases.
    * This offer is not valid in connection with any other rebates, discounts, promotions or other FileMaker volume license programs.

Somewhere in that boilerplate there is, I suspect, the critical rule that means there'll be no free upgrades to FM 12. They're hoping to sell us FM 11 at half price and then convince us we need FM 12.

That said, this offer comes at a good time for me. I have some antique FM 5.5 databases that'll no longer work when Lion drops Rosetta. I just need to figure out how migrate those databases to FM 11 without too much hassle. It seems to involve using FM 7 or 8, but I have neither.
