Review: Fujifilm FinePix X100

updated 06:05 pm EDT, Sat May 21, 2011

We review Fujifilm's DSLR-grade X100 compact

As good as it can be, most associate Fujifilm with bargain cameras, where the emphasis is on the features for the price, not the features themselves. The FinePix X100 is a rebellion against that image: with a full-size sensor, an ultra-bright specialized lens, and high-end construction, it's about appealing to pros or serious hobbyists who will pay anything for good image quality. Our review of the X100 will look into whether Fujifilm has shaken up its reputation or if there's still work to be done.

    review correction

I read about this camera on the fuji site and it explains how the optical viewfinder does show the through-the-lens image (the window in the front just brings in light), so one of the "minuses" is incorrect.

    Not TTL

The optical viewfinder isn't TTL, it uses that little window for the actual image. The amazing thing about the X100 (and the part that macnn totally glossed over) is the hybrid viewfinder. It lets you switch between that little optical viewfinder and an electronic viewfinder which does show TTL. On top of that, while in optical viewfinder mode, the X100 is capable of overlaying an electronic display to let you see focus selection, histogram, field-of-view marks, etc.

Get a photographer to review it.

Apart from the already mentioned mistake of missing the hybrid viewfinder, which uniquely does offer TTL viewing, what on earth is a fixed zoom (unless you mean a zoom lens permanently fixed to a camera) ? This camera does not have a zoom lens, fixed or otherwise, it has a fixed focal length lens, designed to give the best optical quality.
