T-Mo blocks video chat over 3G in Android 2.3.4

T-Mobile Nexus S users trying to use the updated version of Google Talk video chat over 3G have discovered the new feature enabled in the Android 2.3.4 update has been blocked. Instead, users who try to place a video chat are presented a short message stating "You must be connected to a Wi-Fi network to start a video chat." The feature functions as expected over Sprint's 3G network for users of the Nexus S 4G making it apparent that Google has left the functionality for networks to deploy as they choose.

The Google Talk video feature is the first time Google has deployed the functionality in smartphones, after first debuting the enhanced app on Android 3.0 (Honeycomb) for tablets. While the Nexus S and Nexus S 4G users are the first to receive the update as they run an unmodified OS, other users of Android 2.3 will receive the update in the coming weeks or months.

Up until the release of Android 2.3.4, users of devices running Android 2.2 with front-facing cameras have been able to use third-party apps such as Qik to make video calls. Users on T-Mobile using a Nexus S running 2.3.4 will still be able to make video calls, but over Wi-Fi only. [via Engadget]

    Well isn't that nice

Thomas Jefferson believed that most bad government resulted from too much government. I think if cell phone companies existed back when, he would agree that the one exception to this rule would be harsh FCC regulations to protect consumers.
