Seagate GoFlex Satellite hits, streams media to iOS, web

updated 08:50 am EDT, Mon May 16, 2011

Seagate GoFlex Satellite official

Seagate quickly followed up its FCC run with a launch on Monday of the GoFlex Satellite. The 500GB external drive is tailored to iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch owners who want access to a much larger media collection than what their devices can fit. A combination of an iOS app (free, App Store), 802.11n Wi-Fi, and a built-in battery let it send music, photos, video, and general documents without having to be plugged in.

The connection can work with as many three devices simultaneously and can handle non-stop streaming for about five hours. Seagate's app caches as much as possible on the iOS device to reduce the need for a live stream. A syncing app for both Macs and Windows PCs can grab content from iTunes to load on the GoFlex and use later, including some copy protected titles as long as the device is cleared to play it.

A backwards-compatible USB 3.0 cable comes in the box along with adapters for the car and regular wall outlets to charge faster.

Seagate is taking pre-orders today through Amazon, Best Buy, and its own store with the expectation of shipments in July for $200. Android support is coming but won't be available in a native app until the summer. They and other non-iOS devices have to use a browser option instead.

    iPad to GoFlex?

Would be nice to be able to go the other way - if you acquire media/files etc on the iPad to be able to offload them. This would be good for digital photographers to store pix and be able to review them on the road with only an iPad and camera connection kit and the GoFlex.
