Reading List in Lion for Safari shown syncing to iOS

updated 10:40 pm EDT, Sat May 14, 2011

Lion Reading List now syncing with iOS

Apple's newly active Reading List in Safari for Lion Developer Preview 3 is now known to be syncing with iOS devices. Handheld owners syncing Safari bookmarks either through iTunes or through MobileMe are now seeing a rough "com.Apple.ReadingList" folder in their bookmarks list with the relevant articles loaded inside. It's presumed a later preview or the final version of Lion will give the folder a new name and possibly treat it differently in software through an iOS version of the Reading List.

In its current form, the syncing isn't a direct rival to Instapaper. The third-party app is designed to cache pages and articles for reading offline where the bookmark system still needs the user to reach the page online the moment they want to read it. Marco Arment, Instapaper's creator, has likened Reading List to a different product, Readability, rather than his own.

A full implementation of Reading List is likely to show by WWDC in early June. The OS should be the first to have such a feature built-in. Microsoft's Internet Explorer 9 supports HTML5 offline but doesn't have a Reading List equivalent, and Windows 8 so far hasn't shown any evidence of getting its own implementation in early test builds.
