PSN outage reportedly leading to PS3-for-Xbox swaps

PSN outage boon for Xbox 360 console, game sales

Sony's three-week long PSN outage is turning out to be good news for sales of Microsoft's Xbox 360 console, Edge claimed. Sources said PS3 owners are trading in their consoles for cash or Xbox 360s, while sales of PSN points cards and pre-orders of PS3 games are dwindling. A UK vendor who spoke on the condition of anonymity said the second week of the network outage PS3 consoles saw a more than 200 percent increase in trade-ins, with about half of them being traded for cash and the other half for Xbox 360s.

Another retail worker said he saw a "massive increase" in PS3 trade-ins, with most of the people being hardcore online shooter fans. A third source, Tom Mestdagh from a Belgium-based Gameswap store, says traders now want an Xbox 360 rather than cash, as was the usual case before the network outage.

"In every case it is because of Black Ops and or Modern Warfare 2," Mestdagh added. Both games are 'shooters.'

Cross-platform games are also seeing a much larger split in favor of the Xbox 360 as the PSN outage continues. Two of the best examples include Black Ops and FIFA 11 which went from 59/30 for the week ending on April 30 in favor of the 360 to 76/24 as of May 7 and 52/26 on April 30 before dropping to 49/21 last week, respectively.

Mestdagh also said online gamers have stopped complaining about Xbox Live fees.
