Windows Phone 7 "Mango" brings major new features

The forthcoming major Windows Phone 7 update codenamed "Mango" is said to bring Bing AV features, native podcast support and turn-by-turn GPS. Bing Audio is a Shazam-styled service that is now an integrated component of the Bing search window. When a user plays a snippet of a tune, the software will search for the corresponding tune in the Marketplace where it can be streamed or purchased.

Bing Vision builds the ability to scan barcodes, QR codes, books, DVDs, CDs and text straight into the OS. The new feature includes "vision recognizers" allowing users to take pictures of features in the landscape, or buildings and deliver Bing results. Support for augmented reality apps is also said to be included.

Native podcast support is also reported to be coming to WP7. It will allow users to subscribe to podcasts and then either download them or stream them directly from the phone.

Another major addition is native turn-by-turn GPS navigation. The only evidence of the feature to date is a screen shot of the settings page. The feature has been a notable omission from the current version of WP7, so it seems plausible that Microsoft would be keen to remedy this.

Native voice-to-sms messaging is also reputed to be inbound when the Windows Phone 7.5 update arrives later this year. [via WM Poweruser]
