Pioneer puts out GPS with augmented reality mapping

Pioneer shows in-car GPS with Augmented Reality

Pioneer Japan has just introduced four new in-car navigation systems that use a dash-mounted camera to display live images on their screens and superimpose digital images on it to help drivers navigate. The so-called Augmented Reality GPS systems include the AVIC-VH09CS, AVIC-VH09, AVIC-ZH09CS and AVIC-ZH09. The systems can gauge distances between cars or points of interest.

They can tell which lane the car is in, whether a light is red or green and identify other traffic signals. All four share DVD video playback support, Bluetooth, USB ports, a 1Seg digital TV tuner, and an SD card slot. Hard drive-based navigation is standard, as are three years of free map data updates.

The AR-enabled nav systems arrive in Japan before year's end with prices yet to be announced. [via Akihabara]
