LG Optimus Black headed to North America

LG chose an unusual Sunday timeframe to detail launch plans of the Optimus Black. The headlining Android phone is now known to be coming to North America some time after the European release this month. It hesitated to identify carriers by name.

The Black has supposedly been popular and saw pre-orders from 56 carriers in 50 countries.

Its design uses a single-core 1GHz TI OMAP3 processor, unlike the dual-core chip in phones such as the T-Mobile G2X and Optimus 2X. Its focus is instead on the four-inch Nova display, whose 700-nit brightness makes it one of the brightest in the business and easier to see outdoors while using less power indoors. The Optimus Black has a five-megapixel rear camera and a two-megapixel camera up front and has unique additions like Wi-Fi Direct media sharing and a motion-driven gesture interface.

Android 2.2 came preloaded on the Black when we tried it at CES, but it wasn't mentioned if the phone would still use 2.2 or upgrade to 2.3 by the time it ships.
