comScore March data has Apple near ousting RIM

New data from comScore for this past March has pointed to Apple nearly passing RIM in smartphone market share for the US. Shipping 18.65 million iPhones helped Apple gain half a point since December to hit 25.5 percent share in its home country. The BlackBerry fell almost five points in the same space of time, dropping to 27.1 percent and close enough that Apple could pass it in the spring.

Android was still up, gaining six points to reach 34.7 percent. Neither Microsoft nor HP could reverse their declining platforms, both dropping 0.9 points to hit 7.5 and 2.8 percent each.

Despite Google's gains for its collective platform, only Apple was clearly rising among individual phone makers. It gained over a point to represent 7.9 percent of all cellphones sold in the US. RIM declined just a fraction to be in 8.4 percent, but top-placed Samsung and third-place Motorola both dropped as their basic feature phone sales dropped more quickly than their smartphones could climb.

The figures partly clash with those from NPD Group, which had Android dropping slightly among recent buyers, although comScore's are an average where the NPD data was more specific. They still showed a largely consistent pattern where Android's gains have been at the BlackBerry's expense, not the iPhone, and may have shown a Verizon iPhone at least minimizing gains by Android.
