Apple in talks with potential new ambient sensor maker

updated 12:05 pm EDT, Thu May 5, 2011

Could solve problems with current iPhone tech

Apple is currently in talks with a Taiwanese firm, Capella Microsystems, that could see different ambient light sensors built into iPhones, industry sources say. Allegedly Capella has already delivered samples to Apple for verification. Apple's interest in testing them is said to stem from problems with the sensor in the iPhone 4; part orders would, however, only be made by the end of 2011 at the earliest, the sources add.

Another Taiwanese supplier said to be in negotiations with Apple is Integrated Memory Logic, also known as iML. The sources claim that Apple will likely use iML's programmable gamma buffers in the iPad. The latter company has been growing gamma buffer sales in Taiwan and South Korea, and already has a US headquarters.

Capella's sensors may not be in place for the next iPhone. Various reports have hinted that the iPhone 5 will most likely ship in September, and possibly even later. It's not clear what the reason for the delay may be, although it may be connected to major plans for iOS 5.
