Geohot joins hackers' race to jailbreak iPad 2

updated 04:50 pm EDT, Mon May 2, 2011

Current jailbreaks limited to pre-2011 devices

Two prominent iOS hackers are currently racing to jailbreak the iPad 2, reports say. The first is Joshua Hill, also known as p0sixninja, and perhaps most recognized for his work on greenpois0n. Hill recently challenged other developers to dump the iPad 2's bootrom, and one of the people to accept so far is George Hotz, who uses the alias Geohot.

In recent weeks Hotz has become famous for his legal battle with Sony over hacking the PlayStation 3. The case was ultimately settled out of court, in some respects in Hotz's favor. The hacker is also known for being one of the first to unlock the iPhone, although his techniques initially involved a special hardware method.

iPad 2 users are currently limited to Apple's official apps and firmware, despite the fact that the tablet has been on sale since March 11th. Jailbreaking tools have yet to be updated to support anything beyond the iPad 1, iPhone 4, Apple TV and fourth-generation iPod touch. As Apple releases new iOS devices it tends to make subtle hardware and/or software changes that break previous exploits.
