Best Buy puts Macs on sale in advance of iMac refresh

updated 03:55 pm EDT, Mon May 2, 2011

Covers all Mac models

Best Buy has launched a brief Mac sale via its website. All models are covered, ranging from Mac minis and MacBook Airs through to the Mac Pro. Buyers can potentially save as much as $260, in the case of a Mac Pro, but discounts are more commonly under the $100 mark.

Apple is generally expected to announce new iMacs sometime this week, most likely on Tuesday. The refresh should bring iMacs up to spec with Intel's Sandy Bridge platform, with faster Core i3, i5 and/or i7 processors and more advanced integrated graphics to complement dedicated GPUs. Systems will also likely support Intel's Thunderbolt port standard, which handles speeds up to 10Gbps. Until now the only computer to use the standard has been the MacBook Pro; non-Apple machines will only get it in 2012.

    I'm expecting

to hear about a revised Mac Mini as a minor announcement alongside the big Mac Pro refresh, so my guess is that will be coming with the WWDC in mid-June.

    Mac mini

One thing I would like to see with the Mac mini is a significant price drop. $699 just seems too much. If they could make some around $399-$499 I might pick one up for work.
