HBO Go app now officially out in App Store, Android Market

updated 02:30 pm EDT, Fri April 29, 2011

HBO Go app for Android, iOS launches early

The teased HBO Go app that will allow for streaming cable TV content to portable devices has now gone live, and ahead of its initially promised May 2 launch date. The respective apps are now available for iOS devices (free, App Store) and Android (Android Market). Users need to be subscribers to cable or satellite service with an HBO Go deal, however.

The apps promise to bring unlimited and instant access to content that includes any of the 1,400 episodes of any TV show, sports, movies and more on HBO.

The early and limited user reviews available on the respective application stores are mixed. Android users seem to be slightly more disappointed, wishing for better quality and provider and hardware support. The admittedly fewer iPhone users praise it for quality and access.

    call me

when I can subscribe to HBO on my ipad directly. I don't watch anything more than broadcast, HBO and Showtime (the rest I wait for the DVDs on Netflix) so I don't want to pay the cable companies $60 more a month to have the privilege to then pay $20 a piece for the two channels I actually want

Must subscribe to a cable or satellite service?

Why? In this case, a cable or satellite service adds no value. I hate to see progress held back by greed...
