Eee Pad Transformer sellout due to low stock, not demand

updated 05:30 pm EDT, Fri April 29, 2011

Eee Pad Transformer sold out due to low shipments

The unusual sellout of the Eee Pad Transformer at its US launch this week was due to its low supply rather than an overabundant supply, AllThingsD was told this week. JPMorgan analyst Mark Moskowitz found that most Best Buy and Target stores are yet to receive any stock of the apparently popular tablet. In his informal survey, none of the stores he spoke to had received the Android 3.0 hardware, making any sellouts more likely due to low stock.

The Executive Director also heard stock isn't due to arrive until mid-May, thus prompting him to question how it can be deemed as being sold out when it hasn't yet fully arrived.

Sellouts are often genuine but can sometimes misrepresent the actual demand for a product if the designer couldn't or simply didn't ship enough stock.
Unofficially, ASUS only shipped less than 100,000 tablets on launch day rather than the 200,000 originally planned. The shortfall has been blamed on a shortage that would prevent it from meeting its targets until at least May.
