Motorola ships 250,000 Xooms in Winter, posts $81m loss

Motorola Q1 2011 sees 250,000 Xooms ship

Motorola Mobility posted results Thursday (PDF) answering questions about the early performance of the Xoom. About 250,000 of the flagship Android 3.0 tablet shipped worldwide. About 9.3 million devices shipped in total, 4.1 million (44 percent) of which were its Android smartphones.

The company's first quarter split off from its infrastructure side saw it minimize, but not end, losses. It posted a net loss of $81 million dollars versus $212 million a year ago. Revenue was much higher, at $3.03 billion versus $2.48 billion, and could see the losses as explained mostly by a combination of the corporate split as well as investing in the launches of not just the Xoom but the Atrix and other flagships.

While the Xoom figure is much higher than the 100,000 estimated by one analyst, its performance is considered disappointing given the emphasis both Google and Motorola placed on it as the iPad-defeating Android 3.0 flagship, up to and including a Super Bowl ad. At 250,000 units, the Xoom equated to just 5.33 percent of Apple's 4.69 million iPad shipments in the same quarter and 12.5 percent of the two million Galaxy Tabs Samsung sold in its first three months on shelves.

Most of Motorola's faith is being placed in expectations of full quarters for sales of the Atrix and Xoom. Its core Verizon model, the Droid Bionic, has been pushed to the summer in what many believe is a disguised attempt at introducing a new phone in its place.

All the Fandroids have their Xooms.

Look for sales to plummet. The early adopter market is saturated.

    Xoom or fizzle

I wonder how many of those 250,000 are in the hands of the real people?

I saw them all at my Costco!

I swear there were at least a thousand fake xooms cut out of cardboard on a palette in the electronics section. So funny, as if someone would try to shoplift it anyway!

    How many were actually sold?

I wonder how many of those units shipped are sitting on the shelf?
