Google launches official Google Docs Android app

Google has just released the first official Google Docs Android app (free, Market). It will search for content from any connected Google account and let users edit documents using the online mobile editors. Items can be shared from the app with contacts on the phone.

Documents can also be uploaded from a user's phone and opened from Gmail. A widget can be added to a home screen to access three main tasks: a shortcut to starred documents, uploading a photo, or quickly creating a new document.

The app can also, together with the camera, turn photos that contain text into editable Google documents thanks to optical character recognition. This feature can recognize unedited English text but cannot recognize handwriting or certain fonts. Google is working on expanding its capabilities, however.

The new app is compatible only with Android 2.1 and later.
