Update brings revamped UI, improved workflow

Boris FX has added 64-bit support and a large group of new filters in its video effects plug-in suite, launching its Boris RED 5 update today. The program offers transitions, pro-level text and advanced composites for video editing software from Adobe, Apple, Avid and others. The new version extends support to 64-bit editing programs such as Sony Vegas 9 but also supports Mac and Windows video editing programs in 32-bit versions as well. Version 5 includes filters from the Boris Final Effects Complete VFX plug-in collection to Boris RED, including Ball Action, Bubbles and Wiggle Edges.

New filter offerings include Image Restoration Tools, which can smooth skin, reduce noise and remove jagged edges; Particle Array 3D, which creates a grid of particles oriented in 3D space, and Pin Art 3D creates a pin-board look on a layered image. High quality SD-to-HD conversions are available with the new UpRez filter, and the new in-camera effects adds a rack-defocus look. Stylized effects include LED, Damaged TV, Tile Mosaic, Scan Lines, and Prism, while painterly effects portray pencil-sketched images, watercolor effects and charcoal drawings.

RED's keyframe libraries add 50 new transitions, and the software has a new user interface and workflow. Many of the added filters have a compare mode in a live split-screen view.

The suite works with Final Cut Pro 6/7, Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 and After Effects CS4 -- with a software update promised for CS5 support -- and Avid Media Composer v4-5.5. It costs $995, and owners of previous versions of Boris RED can upgrade for $295. Customers who purchased Boris RED 4.3 after June 2nd, 2010 are eligible for a free upgrade.
