updated 10:15 am EDT, Tue April 26, 2011

Casio G'zOne Command Android phone hits Verizon

Continuing with a wave of Android phone launches in the past week, Verizon confirmed the launch of the Casio G'zOne Commando [updated soon]. The phone is the first Android phone with Casio's rugged label and meets the US military's 810G spec for brief immersion in water as well as resistance to drops, dust, vibration, and temperature. A special G'zGear portal is meant for outdoor hikers and gives them tools like a pedometer, a trip history, temperature, star charts, and a compass.

Inside, the Commando is a mid-range smartphone with an 800MHz processor, 512MB of RAM, a 3.6-inch 480x800 touchscreen, and a five-megapixel camera. Android 2.2 comes along with a Casio-tuned interface and supports Verizon's 3G hotspot mode as well as added encryption for workers who would want the Commando as a field phone. Verizon is forcing the use of Bing search in place of Google.

Like all of Verizon's other launches in the past several days, the G'zOne Commando is due to ship on April 28 and will cost $200 on a two-year contract.
