Nintendo confirms successor to Wii coming 2012

Wii successor 2012, demo at E3 2011

Nintendo has announced [PDF] that it will launch an all-new console in 2012. As initially rumored in March, the new console will be demoed at E3 in June. "Nintendo Co., Ltd. has decided to launch in 2012 a system to succeed Wii, which the company has sold 86.01 million units on a consolidated shipment basis between its launch in 2006 and the end of March 2011," said the company in a statement.

A post March 2012 debut for the new console is likely, as the console has not been included in Nintendo's forecasts through to March 2012. The device is expected incorporate HD capabilities for the first, something that has been seen by many as a significant failing in the current Wii. Its principal competitors in the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 both incorporate HD gaming capabilities.

Recently, both consoles have added variations on the motion gaming concept that made the Wii a massive success on launch. But the price edge the Wii enjoyed for a long time has been significantly eroded as its competitors have cut their prices significantly since launching. A combination of factors including its HD shortcomings, as well as graphics and processing limitations, has seen rumors of a price cut to $150 by mid-May a possibility as Nintendo seeks to maintain sales momentum.

In addition, the Nintendo's next-generation console (codenamed Project Café) has been said to rethink the control scheme, as it has done with each successive console. While motion control is almost certain to remain, rumors have circulated that the device might also incorporate a 6.2-inch touchscreen as part of its new gaming interface.

Nintendo's famous game designer Shigeru Miyamoto recently revealed some additional hints about what might be incorporated into Project Café when it goes on sale next year. [via Slashgear]
