Acer may trump Apple with very thin LG Shuriken notebook LCD

Acer may use LG Shuriken LCD for thin notebooks

LCD display makers claimed Monday that Acer was planning to claim an edge in the ultraportable space by using the same display technology behind the LG Xnote P210. An unnamed notebook from the company would use LG Display's new ultra-compact Shuriken LCD to get a 14-inch screen into a 13.3-inch frame. The design identified to Digitimes would cut the bezel thickness by a third, to 0.31 inches, and make the entire panel just 0.16 inches thick.

The panel would also command a premium for Acer, which isn't normally known for using high-end displays. A Shuriken display reportedly costs about $15 more than the usual $30 Acer would likely have to pay.

Shipments could start as soon as May and would have only a limited production run. The company may be using the initial batch as a test for demand and might use the notebook as a way of repairing significant market share losses as the iPad and other tablets ate into its notebook sales.

Acer has been participating in the ultraportable space for some time through its Timeline models but hasn't usually sold them as more than a niche model. Part of its challenge has been overall size, since most Timelines are just under an inch where the MacBook Air is noticeably thinner and overall smaller. The Timeline series has usually counted on significantly lower prices to counteract this, but Apple might have outsold it in the fall by shipping as many as 1.1 million MacBook Air units.

    It must be...

...the trump card behind marketing your products in front of cute Asian models crushes the competition. Why doesn't Apple figure this out?!

If Acer and Apple were stranded in a desert, pitted against each other in a competition for survival, and Acer found a small pool of water before Apple did, the first thing Acer would do is excitedly announce their find to everyone and that it proved they are better than Apple. The second thing Acer would do would be to tell everyone how much they were looking forward to the relief it was about to provide. The third thing Acer would do is to urinate into it. (The fourth thing is bury it under more sand, but by that point no one's interested in what they're doing again.)

Trump alright ... "You're fired", no. "Bad hair", yes.

    Not just about being thin

it is about the entire package. There are many computers that are hardware wise better than Macs. Still, Macs are selling better than their counterparts. Sure part of this is due to the iPhone/iPad effect but not entirely. I we are seeing the impact of the Apple stores making the biggest impact. In a few years we will see if that growth continues is likely to also be due to Apple's *general* better build quality and OSX.

You can argue Macs aren't built better or whatever, but you won't convince me. Having run computer labs for over the past 10 years, I can tell you Macs last longer than my PCs on average. I have bought hundreds of each over the past many years and this is my experience and sample size compared to most people's 3 or 6 computers.

    Now, that's progress

They can fit a 14" screen in a 13.3" frame! That's amazing! I did not know Moore's law applied to that too. Just a few more years, and they will fit my 24" desktop in a 13" laptop. I can't wait.

    I get it!

Shuriken! Jobs! (should have packed them in his check-in baggage).

    Amusing, no?

    Yeah, sure...

Let's make it look so much like Apple's product that some schmoe might buy our product by accident. Yep, that will really 'trump' Apple- especially if we can pull more functionality form our product and call it 'thinner'.

Right an LG display in an Acer laptop... that means what, four weeks until the thing is needing to go in for servicing? LG, least reliable parts manufacturer paired with Acer, least reliable PC maker.
