Sprint tie-in with Google Voice already active

Google Voice now actively using Sprint

Sprint's promised connection to Google Voice has quietly gone live earlier than the rumored April 26 target date. Those visiting Google Voice on the web now have the option of enabling the link, which allows calling from the web using the Sprint phone number as the ID. The system also gives the option of linking the Google Voice number to the Sprint service itself and using Google's text-transcripted voicemail as the default.

Adopters are so far warned that they would lose any messages saved in the Sprint voicemail system with the switch. Customers can flip back if they prefer the conventional method.

Although the service is targeted first at the soon-to-ship Nexus S 4G, Sprint isn't limiting the feature to specific models or Android and will let it work with any phone on the carrier. The service is free beyond what it would cost to make long distance calls. [via BGR]
