Sony says PSP Go still in production for North America

updated 03:15 pm EDT, Thu April 21, 2011

PSP Go production still active for US, Canada

Sony on Thursday said the end of the PSP Go in Japan wasn't affecting North America. Sony of America in a statement promised it was "continuing production" of the handheld console for Canada and the US. For how long wasn't mentioned to Joystiq, though it's assumed the upcoming NGP could mark an end to the more expensive of the two PSP models.

The system has long fought to get significant share over either the Nintendo DS and the regular PSP design owing both to the higher price and its incompatibility with any UMD-only game. Today, it still costs $200 versus the $130 for its more popular counterpart.

Although never explicitly stated, the PSP Go was created with the intention of competing with the download-only iPod touch and to compete more closely on size and storage. It faced an uphill battle with an older processor and software that still didn't compare closely in web browsing, media playback, and other stronger aspects of the iPod.
