Intel promises Android 3.0 on x86 for this year

updated 07:55 am EDT, Wed April 20, 2011

Intel also promises Atom-based smartphones

Intel chief Paul Otellini has revealed that Intel is developing a port of Android 3.0 (Honeycomb) designed to run on its x86 architecture. "We've received the Android code - the Honeycomb version of Android source code - from Google, and we're actively doing the port on that," Otellini said during Intel's conference call on Tuesday.

Otellini said that Intel is working with "first-tier notebook vendors" in order to deliver tablets with Atom chips and running a range of operating systems including Android 3.0, Windows and MeeGo before the end of 2011. "We...launched Oak Trail last week, which is a platform designed specifically for tablets. We are seeing very good design momentum with Oak Trail across multiple operating systems," Otellini added.

Otellini was also questioned about Intel's plans for the smartphone space, which is also currently dominated by ARM-based SOCs. "We remain committed to success in the smartphone segment and we're actively working with a large number of handset manufacturers and carriers around the world on Medfield-based designs...which I think is still the first 32 nanometer phone apps processor in the industry."

Intel Atom-based smartphones were first promised by Intel back in 2009. Otellini said that Intel hopes to rectify the situation by this time next year. When questioned about this, Otellini revealed that he, "would be very disappointed if we didn't see Intel-based phones for sale 12 months from now."
