Apple estimated to have shipped 1.82m Apple TVs so far

Concord says Apple TV may have hit 1.82m total

Concord Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo on Wednesday estimated that sales of the second-generation Apple TV had been steady since it went on sale in October. Extrapolating from the official tally of one million in December, he determined that another 820,000 of the media hub had shipped in the first three months of 2011. He didn't directly explain the reasons why to AppleInsider.

Most have widely presumed several factors at work in the sharp uptick, which led Apple to provide rare sales figures after previously downplaying them for the first generation. The price cut to $99 has been the most frequently cited reason, but the addition of Netflix may also have helped out by giving some viewers access to the very popular, cheap subscription service.

Some buyers may have also seen AirPlay support as an incentive. More recently, Apple added MLB and NBA games to keep up with rival devices' features.

The 1.82 million figure could make Apple TV the most popular device of its kind. Apple's official million-unit target was matched by Roku just a week earlier, but the tally represented lifetime sales and a much slower sell-through rate. Apple has had the advantage of a very wide distribution network and publicity that companies like Roku or Boxee can't usually afford.

Not really the most popular device of it's kind...

If you count the Xbox 360 which also has similar features and plays games.

    Sorry Matt

The 360 (at twice the price or more) isn't a valid comparison.

Sharp uptick of what? They sold 1 million in it's first quarter, then 820k in it's second quarter (supposedly). Can't be comparing it to the last AppleTV, since Apple never even said how many they sold (it was a 'hobby').

And his 'extrapolation' is based on the December information. Really? Couldn't he at least go out and get some in-the-field numbers to 'extrapolate' into jan-march sales? (BTW, 'extrapolate' is the fancy analyst term for "pulling a number from one's a**").
