SMEStorage's Mac Cloud Tools brings together cloud services

updated 05:30 am EDT, Sun April 17, 2011

Supports Amazon S3, Dropbox, MobileMe, more

SMEStorage has debuted its multiple-services program, Mac Cloud Tools, which acts as a "silo" incorporating a number of "name-brand" cloud services into an integrated set of services with the cloud-stored files indexed and integrated into Spotlight. The program works with over 15 popular cloud services, including Dropbox, Amazon's S3, MobileMe, Google and others.

By working as an abstraction layer over various services, Mac Cloud Tools allow them to work as a single service integrated into the Services menu and virtual cloud drive for users to easily access and manage files from various vendors. Files can be stored to a cloud service as simply as right-clicking on it, and new providers can be accessed simply by switching directories. Accessing files is the same as accessing them from local directories, just double-click to open and save when done. Background synchronization tools keeps files from different cloud vendors in sync with the desktop folders.

The possibility of not remembering which cloud service is storing which file is eliminated with the Spotlight integration, which finds files as quickly and easily as it would a local file. Mac Cloud Tools works with Amazon S3, Amazon Cloud Drive, Gmail as a Cloud, (S)FTP as a Cloud, Google Docs, Google Storage, Mezeo, icloud, RackSpace Cloud Files, SkyDrive, Azure, SharePoint (business accounts only), Box.net(personal), Zimbra Briefcase, MobileMe, Live Mesh 2011 (read only), FilesAnywhere (certain accounts), DropBox, and WebDav enabled Storage.

The software costs $30 and incorporates a free package of services including iOS, Blackberry and Android clients to access stored files, 1GB of transfer per month and a limited choice of clouds to work with. Other paid monthly or lifetime plans are available that add services such as SharePoint, no bandwidth restriction and other advantages.

    Mac Storage Services

This is a cool idea, thanks! Now the question is, which cloud storage to choose, and which ones work best with Mac? I liked LiveDrive because it has unlimited storage, and the cool briefcase feature, plus it supports both mac and PC and ftp. I also found this article that goes through its many different features in a LiveDrive review: http://online-storage-reviews.net/reviews/livedrive/
