Meizu MX shown with four-inch Retina Display

Meizu head Jack Wong chose Sunday forum post to show the successor to the M9 in what could be an indirect clue as to iPhone 5 features. Now called the MX, the device once known as the M9II will keep its 640x940 resolution but on a larger four-inch screen. The design was already expected to use a dual-core chip and would be less than a hundredth of an inch thicker than its Apple inspiration.

The hardware on show is believed to be a mockup, but Wong expected the MX to be on sale by the end of the year for a relatively low 3,580 yuan ($548) with 16GB of storage. It should still use Android, likely 2.3 or later by the time it ships, with a heavily customized interface and 1GB of RAM to handle apps.

Although Meizu has increasingly taken to its own hardware design and interfaces after initially trying to mimic Apple closely, its parts choices are often made partly with Apple in mind. The M9 used a Sharp-sourced, 3.5-inch 640x960 display virtually identical in behavior to the Retina Display on the iPhone 4. Unconfirmed rumors have pointed to Apple using a four-inch screen on the next iPhone and thus that both Apple and Meizu might have been told they could expect similar displays. Dual-core should be common in phones this year and should see the iPhone using the A5 shortly before the MX gets a roughly equivalent processor. [via Meizu Me]
