Samsung Galaxy S gets Android 2.3 in Europe

Samsung Galaxy S gets Gingerbread quickly

Samsung began making amends for long upgrade intervals with reports from users that it was pushing out Android 2.3 to some Galaxy S models. Europeans, including the Netherlands and multiple other countries, are being told of a new build when they sync the phone with Samsung's Kies app on the PC. Early anecdotes from the XDA-Developers forum suggest the build is fast and lag-free.

Most are expecting the update to lead to an official source code release from Samsung that would let users load unofficial firmware.

Original Galaxy S owners won't get the same benefits from Android 2.3 as they would on the similar Nexus S, where it's necessary for NFC wireless and full support of the front camera, but they will get many of the purely software-driven helps. The new OS chiefly adds much improved copy-and-paste text, a multi-touch keyboard, built-in VoIP calling over SIP, better app management, and better overall performance with games and running multiple apps. Samsung will have kept its own custom TouchWiz interface.

A US upgrade might not come for some time since the carriers will have to test for their own specific phone features.
