Magellan returns to GIS with eXplorist Pro 10

Magellan has brought back a GIS (geographic information system)-capable portable GPS product in the form of the eXplorist Pro 10 GPS receiver. It runs an open platform on Windows Mobile 6.5 for compatibility with other GIS-based data collection programs. The device is rugged, waterproof and uses two AA batteries to more easily stayed

There is otherwise a three-inch 240x400 color transreflective display along with a 533Mhz CPU, 128MB of RAM and 4GB of onboard memory expandable with a microSD memory card. Photos or videos can be taken with a 3.2-megapixel camera with other data captured courtesy of a three-axis compass, pressure altimeter and a barometer round. Bluetooth is built-in for connecting other devices such as another GPS receiver for greater accuracy than what the eXplorist Pro can do itself.

Magellan estimated the Pro 10 is accurate down to within between three and five meters. A voice-recorder is also built-in. Battery life is rated at up to 15 hours.

Meant for pros, the eXplorist Pro 10 is shipping to any individual and carries a price tag of $700.
