Rumor: Nintendo Wii sequel to leapfrog Xbox 360, PS3

updated 05:10 pm EDT, Thu April 14, 2011

Nintendo Wii sequel may outperform PS3 and Xbox

Nintendo's Wii sequel may not only arrive at E3 but could skip generations in performance. A rumor floated on Thursday would have the system arrive at the E3 show but potentially equal or outrun Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Sony's PS3 in performance. Little else is available from Game Informer's source other than that it would be HD-capable.

The rumor is unconfirmed and should be treated with caution. However, the company is also believed to be queuing up a price cut to $150 for the original Wii in May, just ahead of E3. Price cuts often aren't made a few weeks before the trade event without plans to have new or redesigned consoles first, like the slim Xbox 360.

An updated Wii or a new console entirely may be necessary as Nintendo has been seeing a rapid fall in Wii sales. While often still the console leader in the US, it no longer sees the routine sellouts that defined the Wii from 2006 up to just last year. Gamers have regularly criticized Nintendo for the very conservative Wii hardware, which is based on the same processor as the Gamecube from 2001.

Nintendo would be most likely to choose another Power-based processor like that from its past two TV consoles in order to keep backwards compatibility.

    Noooooooooooooooooo....

to new console. A tablet is a the new console. Just look at graphics support in Apple A5.

Consoles and DSLRs have one thing in common, more and more they will be used by hard-core only. Rest will move on to tablets (for games) and mobiles (for simple and prosumor photographs).

THIS PREMIUM MARKET WILL BE VERY SMALL.
