Opera 11.10 ships with faster Turbo and WebP

Opera took its own turn at revamping its browser by launching Opera 11.10. The upgrade has a new version of its distinctive Turbo compressed browsing mode and is now about 15 percent faster than it was before. The shift comes in part both through deeper compression and the use of Google's WebP picture format, which itself is about 40 percent more efficient than usual JPEGs and similar images.

The speedup is potentially useful for those on slow or heavily metered connections where minimizing the bandwidth use can be vital.

Other improvements bring an expanded version of the Speed Dial that's both more flexible and lets users theoretically set as many thumbnails as they'd like. Plugins can now automatically update, and basic support exists for HTML5's direct interaction with files, although it's not as advanced as in Chrome or Safari. IMAP mail handling in Opera's own software has been given some improvements.

The new version is ready today for Linux, Mac, and Windows users.
