Eye-Fi releases Mobile X2 Wi-Fi enabled SDHC memory card

updated 05:55 am EDT, Tue April 12, 2011

Mobile X2 w. Direct Mode for smartphones, tablets

Eye-Fi, makers of Wi-Fi enabled SDHC memory cards such as the Pro X2, have announced their new Wi-Fi enabled memory card, the Mobile X2 for mobile device connectivity. The new 8GB card operates at Class 6 speed and can store up to 4000 photos or 3 hours of video with the added benefit of being able to transfer these directly to mobile devices in conjunction with Eye-Fi's new iPhone and iPad app or its new Android app.

The Eye-Fi Mobile X2 incorporates a new Direct Mode that allows the memory card to establish a direct connection to a users mobile device by creating its own Wi-Fi network even when on the go. This makes it possible to create instant backups, or the ability to use a smartphone or tablet when in the field to instantly share and edit their photos. The Direct Mode feature will soon be available as an update for users of Eye-Fi's other Wi-Fi enabled memory cards.

Eye-Fi Mobile X2 is available for pre-orders immediately on Amazon.com, and will be available at Apple and Best Buy stores nationwide for $80 on April 17. Direct Mode will be available as a free upgrade to all Eye-Fi X2 cards later this week, along with accompanying free mobile apps for iPhone, iPad and Android devices. The Eye-Fi Pro X2 will be reduced from $150 to $100 starting this month.
