AutoCAD due for Android devices in April
Autodesk on Tuesday said it planned to bring AutoCAD WS to Android-based smartphones and tablets before the end of the month. The version comes after the iPad and iPhone adaptation and will have the same basic editing and collaboration tools intact. Company Senior VP Amar Hanspal told AllThingsD it was a reaction to demand after the iOS version and that it would likely do well in "certain geographies" where Android was popular.
Platform fragmentation was a problem, he said. It had to be tested across roughly 15 different devices and modified to run across different devices, including the and the Samsung Galaxy Tab. "The complicated part of developing for Android is not developing itself. It's the testing," according to the executive.
Specific requirements weren't given out for the app, although simultaneous tablet and phone support needs at least Android 1.6. Autodesk plans to make the app available for free.
