James Cameron and Vince Pace start 3D tech firm

Famous directing team James Cameron and Vince Pace on Monday at their special event said they were forming a new company to tackle 3D hardware in movies and TV. The Cameron-Pace Group hopes to develop technology that would lower the costs of making 3D and get it out to broadcasters. Cameron said he hoped to get a system where "everything will be produced in 3D" and that the 2D version would just have to come from the 3D source.

Cameras will need to be small and cheap enough for that to happen, the duo said.

The two are best known for making Fusion 3D, a camera implementation they used to shoot Avatar. It helped shoot 3D to blend the live action and computer-generated segments and was key to generative persuasive 3D effects.

Cameron-Pace's work may end up becoming a 3D equivalent to the work done by Red, whose Red One and Epic cameras had a similar effect on lowering the cost of greater-than-HD video.

    Lord Cameron the Dictator.....

I love how this guy is single handedly doing this. This isn't a broader move that people are demanding 3D, he has single-handedly developed and sourced this format in such a way that people get curious and try it, and then they say "They're doing it!" so someone else tries it and it keeps going.

He markets something as new and groundbreaking when '3D' or stereoscopic has been around since the Civil War....'3D' motion picture Polaroid introduced about 75 years ago at the World's fair....come on...

3D movies can make more because they COST more to buy a ticket, look at the profit margin and 3D is already a losing battle, so he comes out saying he's going to make it cheap.

What's he going to do when people say "The movies aren't good"?

Cameron can have his 3D universe, but he shouldn't make me have to live in it. -f
