HTC Evo 4G may join Thunderbolt with Android 2.3 in June

HTC Evo 4G, Thunderbolt both due for Android 2.3

A response from an HTC representative has suggested that some of HTC's year-old phones may get Android 2.3. Along with plans to upgrade the Thunderbolt, at least the Evo 4G would also get the upgrade to the newer OS in spring, before the end of June. The TalkAndroid reader didn't get more detail but said it was on track "assuming that there are no major setbacks."

HTC has already said it would bring Android 2.3 to at least a handful of devices but hadn't said how far back the upgrades would go. Any device that supports 2.2 should work with 2.3, but not every company plans to make the switch.

Android 2.3 should be slightly faster than 2.2 on most hardware but is mostly a refinement with a multi-touch on-screen keyboard and easier copy-paste text. It should have built-in VoIP calling. It now better keeps the power use down for an app and makes it easier to close an app. More official front camera support will be relevant but not absolutely needed for either the Evo 4G or the Thunderbolt.
