Blackmagic intros UltraStudio 3D with Thunderbolt

Blackmagic used the start of the NAB media show to bring out a pair of video capture boxes to use the latest in input. The UltraStudio 3D is one of the first of its kind to use Intel and Apple's Thunderbolt and uses it to provide a separate video stream for the left-eye and right-eye feeds in a single stereoscopic 3D image, even on a notebook like the MacBook Pro. The single connection can also feed dual link 3Gbps SDI video, HDMI 1.4a, and balanced analog and AES/EBU audio.

The uncompressed feed can send 12-bit, 1080p video at 60 frames per second. and also supports up to 2K resolution at regular speeds. Regular interleaved 3D works, as do Sony-compatible RS-422 decks and genlock input.

Using the UltraStudio 3D requires a Mac with Thunderbolt but will work with several software suites, including Blackmagic's own DaVinci Resolve as well as Final Cut Studio and Adobe's After Effects, Photoshop, and Premiere Pro. A new version of Media Express is included in the box and needed to fetch the separate streams.

More conventional but still newer computers get the UltraStudio SDI. The box is intended for two-way SDI use on systems with USB 3.0 ports while leaving room for monitoring over HDMI. It powers entirely off of the USB bus and supports RS-422 decks, up to eight channels of audio and 10-bit video.

The cheaper of the two devices comes first, as the UltraStudio SDI will arrive in June for $395. Mac owners get the UltraStudio 3D in July for $995.
