Report: Hong Kong to get two Apple Stores

updated 06:55 pm EDT, Mon April 11, 2011

10-year wait ends for China's business capitol

Hong Kong's long wait for an Apple Store of its own will see not one but two stores opening over the next 12 months, both on Hong Kong Island itself, according to a report at ifoAppleStore. This will end a decade-long wait for the many Apple users there, and at least one of the locations could be a showcase store in a city already known for its vertical architectural design.

The first store to open will be in the International Finance Center, two high-rise office towers connected by a three-story shopping mall. Apple will have a prime location for a two-story store that will feature a glass side facing the street, allowing visitors to see store activity before even entering the mall. The store would be directly across from the city's main train station, which is also linked to the mall by a connecting bridge. The store could be as large as 8,100 square feet and is expected to open by year's end.

The second, smaller store will be in the still-under-construction Hysan Place, a 40-story office tower with 15 floors of retail shopping on the lower levels. It is located only about two miles away from the IFC but is in a different part of the city called Causeway Bay which generally features older buildings and more traditional architecture. The store size is estimated at 20,000 square feet and could be open as early as the second quarter of 2012, though the exact location of the Apple Store in the building is not currently known. Causeway Bay is Perfect!

I lived next door in Happy Valley back in the early 90s. Walked past what is now the Hysan location every day to catch the MTR to my office. I can't think of a better place for an Apple store. Way back when I lived there, finding Apple stuff wasn't easy (unless you were looking for bootleg software at Golden Arcade.) When I was last in HK -- last summer -- I found at least 3 or 4 Apple Authorized dealers at Times Square, about 3 blocks away from the Hysan location. And it seemed like every third person on the subway was carrying an iPhone.
Causeway Bay itself is alive with diners and shoppers morning 'till night. So this store could be as much of a zoo and the Stockton Street store here in San Francisco.
