James Cameron and Vince Pace hint Fusion 3D news

Well-known director James Cameron and cinematographer Vince Pace hinted that some hopes for better 3D at the movies might come to reality in a special event at the NAB video expo next week. The two will be the centerpiece guests at a "Fusion 3D" event on Monday morning that will have news of the "future of 3D entertainment." No other direct clues were given about what would happen at the Las Vegas show.

The plans will likely entail some discussion about the future of 3D movie cameras. Both Cameron and Pace developed Sony's Fusion 3D camera system, which paired up two Sony HDC-F950 cameras. The system was used to capture much of Avatar's live-action side in 3D and was credited in part with making for a more convincing 3D, including the blending of real 3D with computer-generated content.

Cameron has lately been pressing for higher refresh rates on movies. Where most 3D movies are still shot at 2D's usual 24 frames per second, he has wanted 48 or even 60 frames per second to make up for the darkened picture and strobing effects that come from stereoscopic 3D video. It's not clear that any of his requests will be ready so quickly, but it remains one of his most obvious goals. [image via Official Avatar Community]
