BlackBerry Bold Touch in early hands-on

RIM's BlackBerry Bold Touch was given its first, full-fledged hands-on test Thursday in what could be a positive sign for RIM's future. The 9900-series phone supposedly looks better in real life than in renders and has the bulid quality to match. BGR added that the 2.8-inch, 640x480 touchscreen was a centerpiece of the design and was "very responsive."

Some new confirmations and revelations also came with the first-hand look. The phone is using a new battery and may offset whatever energy draw comes from the new screen and faster 1.2GHz processor through an improved battery pack. A dig through the menus also confirmed that BlackBerry 6.1 on the phone will have support for creating a 3G hotspot to share over Wi-Fi. The feature may be set by the carrier, however, and on AT&T might be locked out without paying for the higher-tiered $45 tethering plan.

Some areas of the phone are poised to be conservative, including a five-megapixel camera and 8GB of storage, although it should now record 720p video.

A public debut is expected at BlackBerry World in early May and would have the phone available worldwide in June or July.
