Elgato's EyeTV iOS app gets AirPlay for TV streaming

updated 10:20 am EDT, Wed April 6, 2011

Elgato EyeTV iOS app adds AirPlay

Elgato put out a recursive but requested update to its EyeTV for iOS app ($5, App Store) to add AirPlay support. iPads and iPhones can now stream either live or pre-recorded video from an EyeTV-equipped Mac on the local network. The change lets cord-cutters and others bring live TV either back to the TV or to one that isn't hooked up to a conventional set-top box.

Few other changes have come about apart from smoother audio hand-overs between channel switches.

The app works on virtually any iOS device running 3.1.2 or later, although AirPlay needs at least iOS 4.3 and thus either an iPad, an iPhone 3GS, or a third-generation iPod touch.

Airplay is audio only on this app

Look at the picture above, see the "speaker" icon in the airplay selection menu. It isn't transmitting audio AND video, just audio. I have confirmed this with my own EyeTV/iPhone 3GS 4.3.1/AppleTV 2 unit. I can only get audio NO VIDEO from the EyeTV app.

EyeTV AirPlay is audio and video

Audio and video transmit without incident via AirPlay. If you're not experiencing that, then please contact Elgato Support at http://tickets.kb.elgato.com for assistance.
