New York Yankees object to Cablevision iPad app

updated 04:15 pm EDT, Tue April 5, 2011

YES Network claims Cablevision iPad app not clear

New York Yankees and New Jersey Nets broadcaster YES Network in a remark disputed the presence of its shows on the Cablevision iPad app. Despite Cablevision tapping directly into its existing cable network, YES told the TV provider it "does not have the right" to stream the live games. It didn't say in comments to Multichannel whether it had threatened a lawsuit.

Cablevision hasn't publicly responded to the notice but, on launching the app, explicitly claimed its existing rights covered the deal. Its IP-based cable network had permissions to flip over to different formats without having to negotiate the same deals that have forced changes in Time Warner Cable's app.

YES may have a strong financial incentive to try and block its content from Cablevision's title. It currently offers live Internet streaming of Nets and Yankees games for $60 per season and may want the higher profits that come from the online-only deal. YES still gets paid through use of the iPad app but at regular cable TV channel rates.

How else can the Yankees continue

to prove that the amount of money you throw at something does not guarantee success. (teehee!)
