Indie band kicks out whole album made on GarageBand for iPad

Ultramods make album solely on GarageBand for iPad

Relative newcomer indie band The Ultramods reached an inevitable milestone on Monday by becoming the first known band to record entirely using GarageBand for iPad. Their new release Underwear Party ($10, iTunes) was composed and recorded entirely on the Apple tablet by the duo, Max Sparber and Coco Mault, over the course of two weeks. To fill in instruments they didn't have, they used both a Smart Drum for beats and a directly composed but virtual lead guitar.

Everything was recorded on the spot, including bass guitar and vocals over the iPad's microphone.

The ability to record entirely on the iPad was a "huge transformation," Sparber said. He noted that even in 2010, a basic album recording could cost thousands to make beyond just the equipment. GarageBand was part of an "ongoing democratization" that made it easy to publish on the cheap. Apple's decision to waive many of the up-front costs for being published on iTunes also helped.

While music making has been common on notebooks, it's been unheard of on tablets owing to the performance of tablets and the lack of software support, both of which were resolved this year. The iPad 2's dual-core processor is fast enough to handle eight-track recording, or enough to record fairly complex arrangements, and is also designed to fill in the gaps for those who either can't play every instrument or can't do it at the same time. It also notably has direct support for input from real-world instruments and can generate sounds that wouldn't be possible with a conventional instrument. [via The Loop and Wired]

    it sounds like it too

swearing and crappy lyrics does not impress me,anybody could have made this album on a cassette recorder. Anybody can put their music on iTunes. Anybody can make music and record it on an Ipad,it takes talent to do it well. I can't wait til somebody really makes an album on the ipad.

    I'm all for indie bands...

But this album is utter c***. I've heard bands make great music on iOS, but this isn't one of those bands.

Try to get past lyrics and style

You may not like either the lyrics of the the musical style, but from digital recording aspect I reckon they've done a great job. From a strictly accousitc viewpoint, the sound is warm and professional.

You actually couldn't put this together with a tape deck (at the very least, you'd need a drum machine), but even if you could, you'd need high end gear costing far more than the iPad to get even close to this sort of sound.

The point here is that the iPad has come of age as a digital recording tool and other bands, perhaps more to your liking, will follow this path.

    Musical content asideā€¦

the reason this is "punk" is that nobody would get away with the S***** sound quality otherwise.

    Seriously, it's just atrocious.

That's not "democratization" of music-making - four-track cassette recorders have been around for three decades, at about the iPad's price - and quality - point.

Garageband for iPad is a godsend

For people like me, who have musical ideas but not the chops, Garageband for iPad is truly ideal.
I did have a 4-track recorder (Tascam / Fostex) but had always to rely on other musicians to play the guitar-parts. Now I can demo a good-sounding song within matters of minutes. Amazing.

Oh, and the iPad 1 is also fast enough to handle eight-track recording.
