Leaks point to Windows 8 getting 'Immersive' tablet UI, dock

Windows 8 hints at Immersive UI and dock

Microsoft's aim to get a tablet-optimized UI in Windows 8 was supported on Friday by registry key discoveries in a milestone build. Repeated references exist to an "Immersive" shell that would launch on top of Windows. GeekSmack's screenshots also make mentions of a docking system that would couch apps and an "Immersive browser" that would be more than just what's seen today.

What Immersive and the dock would entail aren't evident. Clues have already emerged that it would use some cues from the Metro interface in Windows Phone 7. It's possible the docking may relate to the taskbar much like Windows 7, where an app icon can be both a launcher and a status window. No complete interface elements exist to piece together a working sample.

The developer has long hinted that Windows 8 would be its first truly optimized for finger touch and is planning to add ARM processor support to help with the often criticized short battery life of Intel-based tablets. It may nonetheless ship only in late 2012 and could leave Apple with a year and a half lead with an optimized tablet OS.

If Windows 8 is fully backwards compatible, the "Lead" Apple would have is pretty much erased. Being able to run full Windows programs along side tablet-optimized ones would really be an advantage for Microsoft and existing Windows ecosystems.

    In MS-Speak...

"Immersive" means we have yet to implement the ESC key so you can go back to doing something familiar.

A Ferrari that hauls trash, too

Baggage is exactly what drags Microsoft back.

    Windows 8

It's possible that Microsoft will stagger the release of Windows 8, with the tablet version in the first half of next year and the desktop towards the end of 2012, Dell appears to have the road map for Windows 8 and seems to think they'll have a Tablet version of the OS early next year.

I don't think that Windows 8 will be a direct competitor for the ipad, It will most likely include a file system and more of a full fledged OS vesus the ipads iphone based OS, but will be ARM based and will have vastly better battery life than today.
Either way, we should find out more within the next few months.

Actually what "lead" means... that Microsoft is once again going to try and shove Windows onto mobile devices such as phones & tablets. It is an approach that has failed time and again. They know not how to innovate but other than through Windows and Office, their sacred cash cows.

With tens of millions of devices being sold running iOS or Android, you'd think the writing is clearly on the wall for thick-headed, egocentric one's asking for Windows on their devices!

Since this is all speculation (and all based on the interpretation of some stupid registry keys), could it be they're just copying apple and taking their interface from Windows Mobile and hacking it onto Windows 8? You know, they way Apple is dumbing down OS X by making it more iOS like?

    Windows 8 -- shipping in 2013

That's like 2 years away. Christmas 2012, after-Christmas sales January of 2013. Why are we reading details of what's going to be in it?

    What's the code name?

Since forever-delayed Vista was referred to as "Longhorn," then the code name for cramming the guts of Win 8 (with Win Tab 8 as an "shell" on TOP of THAT) into an ARM-powered device should be "shoe horn"!

(BTW, the same general strategy is also being used on WP8 according to nearly all reports. Can any of this go well?)
