Sony Music Unlimited due soon for PSP, NGP coming

updated 08:30 am EDT, Fri April 1, 2011

Sony Music Unlimited near PSP, Xperia Play, NGP

Sony in a chat late Thursday said that Music Unlimited would come to all of its main mobile devices this year. The PSP would get it within a "matter of weeks," while the Xperia Play and other Android devices should get it sometime this year. Sony also promised Eurogamer the NGP would get the streaming service, though whether it would be ready for the late 2011 initial launch or wait until 2012 wasn't mentioned.

The aim was for a "more comprehensive space" as part of the Qriocity service, where games, music, video, and other services were all available from a single account, Sony Network Entertainment chief Shawn Layden said. A user should have access to the same content anywhere and ideally have continuous experiences for games. He repeated an example from the NGP introduction where a user might play some of a game on the PS3 and either keep going on the NGP or get updates about what others are doing in the background.

Music Unlimited is already available in the US on Blu-ray players, Bravia TVs, and the PS3. The service is unusual in offering different tiers that behave like entirely different rivals. A $4 monthly plan behaves like a premium Internet radio service with unlimited skips but no direct control over tracks. At $10, users get full on-demand control much like Slacker's on-demand music or Rdio.
