HP exec blasts Apple for lack of partner focus with iOS

updated 09:30 pm EDT, Tue March 29, 2011

WebOS said to be better, more profitable option

HP's Stephen DeWitt has blasted Apple for its lack of partner relationships with potential developers on the iOS platform. The executive, who works as the senior vice president of the company's Americas Solutions Partners Organization, suggests that the webOS platform will benefit from a vastly different approach that focuses on building channel partnerships.

"Apple's relationship with partners is transactional, completely. Apple doesn't have an inclusive philosophy of partner capabilities, and that's just absurd," DeWitt told CRN in an interview at the company's Americas Partner Conference in Las Vegas.

HP is currently working to bolster its webOS partner endeavors, promoting the platform to other companies and providing assistance and incentives. DeWitt acknowledges that a turnaround likely will take place through next year, rather than immediately.

"This is new business for our partners, and its new business for HP, and we're going to learn where we need to invest," DeWitt said.

Despite the enthusiasm within HP, many developers still consider iOS and Android to be the necessary routes for effective and profitable businesses that take advantage of smartphone or tablet capabilities. It remains unclear if HP's incentives and other strategies will help webOS gain traction.

    Yes

Because Apple's way of doing things has worked out so INCREDIBLY BADLY for them.

    the partners are the developers

HP should just fold it up. They should use the following as an excuse to gracefully exit:

boo hoo, Japan's out-of-control situation is causing parts shortage, so we have decided to leave this arena.

    Acer's CEO: are you listening?

    WebOS

WebOS is not going to have any traction. They will put it on everything and include Windows OS as well. HP only knows the old model which worked well for them. You know the old saying, change or be changed. HP is going the learn the hard way.

    That's good

Keep learning where to invest, HP. Eventually, you'll come full circle.

    As soon as...

As soon as I figure out what this means ...

""Apple's relationship with partners is transactional, completely. Apple doesn’t have an inclusive philosophy of partner capabilities, and that's just absurd,""

... then I'll get back to you. (Maybe not happening too soon ...)

In the meantime, Apple's my partner.

Ask MS or any of its partners

How well 'partnering' works. Plays for Sure is just one example of 'partnership' gone wrong.

The thing is, everyone, and I mean everyone, wants a piece of what Apple is doing. It is driving all of these companies nuts because it's impossible to replicate without a good plan and years to implement it. So the only other option, is to hope that Apple opens up and starts 'sharing' like all these guys are their friends or something. Not gonna happen.

Years ago, when we were all sitting around here waiting and waiting for Apple to finally latch on and grab some real market share, or show potential customers the capabilities of their OS, these guys were not going out of their way to 'partner'. I will say that HP may have been more supportive than other companies, but only because they stood to directly profit from the unique Mac demographic.

In any case, at this point Apple does not need any freaking partners, so HP and the rest of them, Dell included, better take the crumbs they can pick up, and understand that their advice is not needed, nor apt to Apple in anyway , shape or form.
