Samsung 4G phone confirmed as Droid Charge through PR leak

Samsung Droid Charge identified through red eye PR

Suspicions that Samsung's 4G phone for Verizon would be called the Droid Charge were validated on Tuesday after an intercepted PR shot gave away Verizon's plans. The full-touch design has its own unique take on Verizon's signature red eye from the Droid line. PocketNow's image would mark the first instance of a non-Motorola phone getting the label and possible confidence that Samsung could make a top-tier Android device.

The phone is partly based on the Galaxy S with a 1GHz Hummingbird chip, but it will both get the prerequisite LTE-based 4G as well as a front camera and an upgraded eight-megapixel rear camera. Samsung has also moved up to a larger 4.3-inch screen and switched to the same Super AMOLED Plus display as in the Galaxy S II. Android 2.2 is still thought to be in place, though, and it will use the original's version of TouchWiz rather than the 2011 revamp.

Most expect the Droid Charge to arrive on April 7. Its price hasn't been named, but the reduced storage compared to the HTC Thunderbolt might put it closer to the industry-standard $200 on contract instead of the Thunderbolt's $250.
